Abstract: This article critically analyzes the position stated in L.S. Chernyak’s article “On the book Testament and Metaphysics”. This is a counter-modernist position that views modernity as a person’s mental departure from a religious and spiritual basis. This position creates a challenge, which should be answered by methodological work aimed at identifying the socio-historical logic of modernity and the role of religious and idealistic positions in this logic. The author of this article offers his own vision of this issue and points out that the refusal to consider the positive of modernity can easily lead to a “new Middle Ages” in the negative sense of this concept.
