Abstract: This sequel to Soul in Darkness develops the ideas of the ‘three circles of fear’ — natural, social and individual — their mythological roots and cultural forms. The paper also introduces and explores the original concept of the ‘nightscape’ — the ‘dark world,’ a negative universe of horror and the constant backdrop to stories in this genre, presented in the form of a ‘magical country in reverse.’ The paradoxical and symbolic nature of the concept of the body is explored, which first appears as the antithesis and complement to the concept of the soul, but which contains the possibility of re-evaluating this subjective dichotomy.
