Abstract: The theses put forward by A.P. Ogurtsov in the article «Defeat of Philosophy» are interpreted. The focus is on the author’s statements about the loss of cultural fundamental goals and values by philosophy, which leads to a change of social priorities — the place that used to belong to philosophy is occupied by religion and theology. The New Age era turned out to be possible due to the change of faith, the displacement of Christianity in various variants from the center of social life to its periphery, and the installation of faith in autonomous science and philosophy in the public consciousness. The autonomy of science was provided by philosophy as the foundation of the science, as the experience of its (science) self-justification. The logic of self-grounded knowledge, which did not need different kinds of religious authorities, was just the light that illuminated the way of mankind into the future. E. Husserl, as well as A. P. Ogurtsov testify to the refusal of science’s mission to be a torch that illuminates the path of humanity, which was outlined in the beginning of the 20th century and manifested itself in all its obviousness to its end. The crisis within philosophy turns into a kind of ideological counterrevolution — religion returns to the social place from which it was pressed by philosophy and science at the beginning of the New Age.
